Ayurveda consist of three main doshas, which are made up of 5 main elements. the 5 main elements include:
Ether (space) -The first element. The ear and mouth are associated with this element. Although, all empty spaces in the body are associated with this element
Air – The second element. It represents oxygen, breath, motion, and lightness. Is present in the respiratory system and nerves. Has a close relationship with space.
Fire – The third element. Related to ether. Ether provides fire with space to burn. Related to air because it provides the fuel for the fire. It is closely associated with the eyes and the body’s heat. Thoughts, emotions, and obsessions are also associated with fire.
Water – The fourth element. Water is associated with ether, air, and fire. It is the protector of the body. Water is expressed in five ways: stomach, the nerves, saliva, your joints, and the respiratory system. It is also associated with blood.
Earth – The last of the main elements. Earth evolves from the the previous four elements and contains the elements in it. Earth is associated with our bones, nails, teeth, and sense of smell.
Each individual has a unique combination of these five elements and can be articulated in one’s doshas. It is vital knowing what combination you are to properly apply Ayurveda to your lifestyle. The five elements are used to articulate a persons Ayurvedic placement in order to fully understand them and treat them effectively. The three dohas are:
Vata – Air and Ether. Thin, light, and tall people. An imbalance in this dosha can cause excessive eating, fear, anxiety, and digestive issues. Vata type people tend to have dry skin and feel cold often.
Pitta – Fire and Water. Muscular, medium build, outgoing, warm people who are great leaders. Tend to have acne-prone skin. Can be angry and suffer high blood pressure, heart problems and inflammatory problems when out of balance.
Kapha – Water and Earth. Heavier build, calm, loving, and forgiving people. Can be possessive and greedy when out of balance. They can suffer from obesity and from respiratory problems.
Every human being possesses a combination of these three doshas. Although, everyone has a different dosha that makes up their personality and physiology.
