Did you know that Ayurveda can provide beautiful, lustrous, and healthy hair?  Our hair is noticed by everyone we meet and is one of our most dominant characteristics. Who wouldn’t want beautiful healthy hair, right? Currently the market is flooded with countless name brands that provide a synthetic approach to hair care. The problem is that these products contain harmful chemicals that our scalp absorbs. Ultimately, this works against us and creates imbalances in our doshas.  Ayurveda provides a natural, holistic approach to hair care that is safe for our bodies. It’s a much different approach because it uses both products and treatment strategies. Ayurveda tackles the root cause of the problem, which is often is due to imbalances beneath the surface.

Much like our skin, it’s important to know what type of hair one has so you can apply the right treatments. Are you a vata, pitta, or kapha type hair?

Vata type hair is thin and usually a little coarse. It could be straight or curly, or a combination of the two. It grows quickly and can be hard to keep up. This can be a challenge to style. Having too much kapha can cause the hair to be frizzy, dry, brittle, and lack luster. It can also cause the hair to fall out in clumps, thin out, and cause split ends.

Pitta type hair is straight, soft, and predictable. It is moderately thick, but very fine. will cause the hair follicles to be too hot, which can damage the hair and lead to premature thinning, baldness, and turning grey too early. Excessive heat in the hair follicles is usually associated with being hot-headed, excessively ambitious and short tempered.

Kapha type hair is wavy, lustrous, strong, full, thick, and coarse. Having excess kapha causes heaviness, excessive oiliness, and the hair to be thick.

Stress can be a major factor in hair health. When we are stressed out, it can cause a influx of hormones to be released and cause our hair to age prematurely. Vata and pitta types of hair are particularly susceptible to stress. It is important to lower our stress levels to maintain healthy hair.
